OBITUARIES
BERNARD GEORGE We report with deep regret and sadness the sudden death of Bernard George from The Volunteer on June 5th.
Born in Newport, Bernard moved to Seavington five years ago, when with his family, he took over The Volunteer after spending 20 years in Africa.
Bernard soon became a very popular landlord who had time for all customers both young and old and was highly respected for his openness, fairness, humour and interesting conversation. The funeral service took place at St Michael’s Church, Seavington on 12th June followed by cremation in Yeovil. Both services were attended by many members of the Village and numerous friends and family from farther afield.
Our deepest sympathy goes to his wife Dorothy, daughters Christine and Susan, son-in-law Ernst and grandchildren Derek and Nicky. _
Donations are being received by Ash Bros for the Intensive Care Unit at Yeovil Hospital.
MELINDA CAMBELL
Melinda Campbell died on 7th June 1990. She was born in London where she spent the first forty years of her life.
At the age of 19 she married Lionel Pearson, a well known architect who was responsible inter alia for the design of the Artillery War Memorial at Hyde Park Corner. He once said that he had been bored all his life until he met Melinda; since that he had never had a dull moment. Her first husband died in 1953. After her subsequent re marriage, she moved to the country and developed a great interest in garden and bred pigs.
In 1981 she and Mr Cambell came to Seavington where her great generosity, especially to children, was well known. By any standards Melinda was an interesting person, of many talents. She is survived by a daughter.
The donations which amount to £130 at present are being received by Ash Bros and will be given to the The Royal Red Cross Society and the Woodlands Trust.
