From: Hilary Jones

It is my husband’s mother’s family who come from Somerset and a lot of them from Shepton Beauchamp.  Her maiden name was Welch and the names I gave you, because of the connection with Seavington, are from my
husband’s great great grandmother Mary Bealey who married John Welch.
Betty Ash married William Napper in 1791 but it appears that he was married to Elizabeth Ash previously, she died in 1789.  Betty and William were his great great great great grandparents.  I got all this info from another tree on the ancestry website going even further back to Thomas Napper and Sarah Fussell at the end of the C17th which means great x6 grandparents.

My family left Seavington and emigrated to Australia in 1881. Sadly, when I was younger and visiting the UK, I hadn’t developed and interest in family history, and didn’t get to visit the area. Alas.

Chislett
From: William (Bill) Chislett

Re A history project on the houses for the two villages. There are tythe maps in the SRO and details of the alms houses sold off by the Church in the 19c. The volume 78 of the Somerset Records Society contains details of the Bible Christians who build Bulah Chapel now a private residence in Dark Lane. My GGG Grandfather John Chislett (1799-1876 Carpenter)sold the land to the society and was an active member. The volume contains many names of SSMary inhabitants who were members. In his will he left five cottages that were sited by the well (I take it to be the pump)he owned to five of his six children. His eldest son John my GG grandfather was not left anything perhaps because he became a publican after his retirement from the Royal Marines. His other two sons Charles and William emigrated to Canada. Charles married Emma Marsh in 1850 at SSM. I have a photo of Emma if you would like it for the the magazine. Regards Bill Chislett Bath.

Hopkins
From: F Hopkins (CANADA)

My paternal grand parents, Vicky and John Hopkins, first lived on School Lane, then the council houses where my Granfi died in 1952. Gran Hopkins lived in one of the bungalows on Water Street (I think No 4) until she died in 1964. That’s when my Seavington summer holidays ended. Prior to that we visited every year for two weeks.
My maternal grandmother was Florence England (nee Best) of Shepton married to Fred England, I think of Sth Petherton

From: Maureen Fullerton – lived at Seavington House

I am attaching one or two photos - these are all I have of Seavington.  One of them - Seavington House, is from a card that France Jack gave me when we came to view the house before buying.  It is Seavington House with a chapel at the side.  The chapel was removed when the road was widened to make the 303 road.  There are two of the view from a window of the 303 showing the cottages and the pub.  And lastly, my favourite view of the trees in the back garden.  Beautiful.

Lawrence
From: Vivienne Killeen

My mother lived in Seavington as a child until she married in 1933 and has told me many stories of her childhood there. She told me how everyone took trays of Sunday joints and potatoes to the Bakery on Sunday mornings to be picked up cooked and ready to eat after church. Her family could not afford a Christmas tree at Christmas so her father used to find a big bush of Mistletoe to which they attached ribbons and sugar mice. My favourite story is about her goose. Both my mother and her brother were given goose eggs to hatch out. Uncle Arthur’s egg did not hatch but Mums did and she looked after the little gosling so that it thought she was his mother. It followed her to school and would wait for her outside, sometimes making an awful lot of noise.
Mum’s name was Eva Lawrence, she was born in Shepton Beauchamp but the family moved to Seavington when she was about 3 years old.

RE CORRESPONDENCE WITH BARBARA PATCH ABOUT THE WARE FAMILY AT BUCKRELLS FARM
I am glad you are enjoying the photograph (BPA336), it has been very enjoyable to
us as well.  I also live in the USA, in South Carolina though.  Barbara
and I have been searching records for the Patch family and Ware family for about a year and have also used your website to locate gravesites for some of our ancestors.  Thank you for having this website for some of us who would otherwise not have access to records and information to
complete our family trees.  We also agree that this photo is taken on
the site of Buckrell’s farm.  I have been doing research on that particular farm since learning of its existence from another Ware
relative. It is nice to be attached to such a fine landmark.  Thank you
once again, please contact either myself or Barbara Patch if you would like any more information.

Poole
From: Alexandra Tarbun

My mother’s side of the family, the Pooles, lived in Seavington House for many years and I believe they built it, although I will have to check that.
My cousin was able to trace our family, in Seavington, back until the 1700s, if not earlier. Apparently the Poole family name is all around the village. Another one of my cousins also researched the family history last year..
As I said my family owned Seavington House for many years. I’m sure they would still own it now, from the love my grandmother showed for it, The house was gambled away, or the things in it. Eventually the family was forced to sell the house - my grandmother was distraught but she had lost the battle to keep the house. The house was sold for £2500 and the grandfather clock for £500. I have the stamp from the house - the one that imprints the heading on a letter.I also know that my Great (Great?) Grandfather set up the Seavington Hunt and I have the Cup for “Best Puppy of the Season” 1883 awarded to James Poole.

Hello,
I am researching my family name of Rowsell and I believe that it originated in the Seavington area. Today I visited the area and also the church of st Mary. I was able to go into the church and noticed the plaque in memorium to an ancestor of mine Arthur Hood Rowsell. I have traced back a fair way and know names of various ancestors, although I know very little. My grandfather Albert Rowsell is 91 and still alive. His grandfather was also called Albert Rowsell and his grandfather was a man called Arthur Hood Rowsell who was born in seavington in 1825. If there is any help of where I can go next or contact any help would be gratefully received.

Many thanks
Paul Rowsell

Scott -
From: Loretta Wagner - Alice Springs, Australia

Received Monday 2 May 2011:
My husband and self are coming to the UK and leave this Wednesday. The dates for our Somerset stay are 7th to 20th May so I am looking forward to doing research again in your lovely village
I have been researching my Scott family who came from Seavington St Mary for many years and I have also been able to do research in the UK many times but it is several years now since our last visit.
I have been able to obtain more information from Australia by sending away for certificates and I am now wanting to find a birth and marriage certificate which requires searching parish records.
I have been to the Somerset Records and I am also a member and am looking forward to researching in the new building but I was wondering if there are any records held at Seavington as I am looking at a birth for between 1767 - 1772 and a marriage c1799.
On our last visit we were unable to look inside St Mary’s Church as at the time John Tudor was away and I believe he is not in the village now.
Hoping you will be able to help as we are looking forward to our stay in Somerset.

My mother’s grandfather Charles Scott came from the Seavingtons (born 1874) and moved to the Rhondda Valley to work as a coalminer. So am very interested in your village history project.
Charles Scott was certainly in Whitelackington in 1881, with father Walter, mother Mary Ann (Vickery), but both parents were in Seavington St Mary in previous censuses and he was baptised in Seavington St Michael Ist Feb 1874.  Charles was in Tonypandy as a lodger by 1891 census married 1895.

Stone
Stuckey
From: Jim

It may be of some interest to you to learn that a family named STONE were from the same village as the Stuckey family. They. left the Old Country on the same ship. In fact the two families became connected via a marriage in Queensland. Stone’s Corner in Brisbane was named for Job Stone of this family. Also, Job Stone Junior married Mary Ann Gould who was perhaps the greatest female equestrian of all time. It’s just another link to your village.

Vaux
From: Malcolm Vaux

I am, also, researching my Vaux family ancestors, many of whom lived in the Seavingtons and wonder if you are able to help me progress my research or link me with someone else who can.

For connection, my grandfather, John Vaux, was born at Seavington St. Michael on 11th September 1881and died at Castle Cary on 8th Aug 1936,
aged 54 years old.

My great great grandfather, William Vaux, was the Parish Clerk for 33 years (1851 - 1883) and lived at West Street, Seavington St. Mary when the 1881 census was taken. He was born on 31st December 1820 and died on 25th September 1883. My wife and I visited the area last year and photographed the gravestone of William, and his wife Elizabeth, in the Seavington St. Michael Churchyard.

Any help that you are able to give me would be very much appreciated.

Message:
Hello,

My name is Graeme Vickery, and I believe after much reserarch I am a descendant of Isaac Vickery and Hannah Long Cica 1770’s. Isaac was apparently the father of Robert Vickery who emigrated to Australia in 1849.
I am a direct decendant of Giles Vickery (son of Robert)and have documents to confirm this. They initially were supported on the land, then followed the gold rush in and around Bathurst NSW, dabbled in Pubs around Forbes NSW and associations with Bushrangers, then followed coal mining. I have researched the family here and am now looking at tripping to the UK next year. Can you offer some contacts who might be able to assist in my quest.
Are there any common relations that still reside in the area ?

Its early days, but I need to firm things up to get some earlybird specials on flights.

Bev Bonning and Lisa Sheppard are relatives that has been especially helpful in keeping me focussed and I owe a depth of gratitude for being able to drill down on my roots around somerset.

Await your feedback, and possibly a one to one who can assist.

Regards,

Graeme.
