Bonning | From: Bev Bonning (Australia) My family left Seavington and emigrated to Australia in 1881. Sadly, when I was younger and visiting the UK, I hadn’t developed and interest in family history, and didn’t get to visit the area. Alas. Chislett | From: William (Bill) Chislett Re A history project on the houses for the two villages. There are tythe maps in the SRO and details of the alms houses sold off by the Church in the 19c. The volume 78 of the Somerset Records Society contains details of the Bible Christians who build Bulah Chapel now a private residence in Dark Lane. My GGG Grandfather John Chislett (1799-1876 Carpenter)sold the land to the society and was an active member. The volume contains many names of SSMary inhabitants who were members. In his will he left five cottages that were sited by the well (I take it to be the pump)he owned to five of his six children. His eldest son John my GG grandfather was not left anything perhaps because he became a publican after his retirement from the Royal Marines. His other two sons Charles and William emigrated to Canada. Charles married Emma Marsh in 1850 at SSM. I have a photo of Emma if you would like it for the the magazine. Regards Bill Chislett Bath. | View comments Add a comment |

England Hopkins | From: F Hopkins (CANADA) My paternal grand parents, Vicky and John Hopkins, first lived on School Lane, then the council houses where my Granfi died in 1952. Gran Hopkins lived in one of the bungalows on Water Street (I think No 4) until she died in 1964. That’s when my Seavington summer holidays ended. Prior to that we visited every year for two weeks. | Add a comment |

Fullerton | From: Maureen Fullerton – lived at Seavington House I am attaching one or two photos - these are all I have of Seavington. One of them - Seavington House, is from a card that France Jack gave me when we came to view the house before buying. It is Seavington House with a chapel at the side. The chapel was removed when the road was widened to make the 303 road. There are two of the view from a window of the 303 showing the cottages and the pub. And lastly, my favourite view of the trees in the back garden. Beautiful. | Add a comment |

Lawrence | From: Vivienne Killeen My mother lived in Seavington as a child until she married in 1933 and has told me many stories of her childhood there. She told me how everyone took trays of Sunday joints and potatoes to the Bakery on Sunday mornings to be picked up cooked and ready to eat after church. Her family could not afford a Christmas tree at Christmas so her father used to find a big bush of Mistletoe to which they attached ribbons and sugar mice. My favourite story is about her goose. Both my mother and her brother were given goose eggs to hatch out. Uncle Arthur’s egg did not hatch but Mums did and she looked after the little gosling so that it thought she was his mother. It followed her to school and would wait for her outside, sometimes making an awful lot of noise. | Add a comment |

Stone Stuckey | From: Jim It may be of some interest to you to learn that a family named STONE were from the same village as the Stuckey family. They. left the Old Country on the same ship. In fact the two families became connected via a marriage in Queensland. Stone’s Corner in Brisbane was named for Job Stone of this family. Also, Job Stone Junior married Mary Ann Gould who was perhaps the greatest female equestrian of all time. It’s just another link to your village. | Add a comment |
Vaux | From: Malcolm Vaux I am, also, researching my Vaux family ancestors, many of whom lived in the Seavingtons and wonder if you are able to help me progress my research or link me with someone else who can. For connection, my grandfather, John Vaux, was born at Seavington St. Michael on 11th September 1881and died at Castle Cary on 8th Aug 1936, My great great grandfather, William Vaux, was the Parish Clerk for 33 years (1851 - 1883) and lived at West Street, Seavington St. Mary when the 1881 census was taken. He was born on 31st December 1820 and died on 25th September 1883. My wife and I visited the area last year and photographed the gravestone of William, and his wife Elizabeth, in the Seavington St. Michael Churchyard. Any help that you are able to give me would be very much appreciated. | View comments Add a comment |

Vickery Long | From: Graeme Vickery From: Graeme Vickery My name is Graeme Vickery, and I believe after much reserarch I am a descendant of Isaac Vickery and Hannah Long Cica 1770’s. Isaac was apparently the father of Robert Vickery who emigrated to Australia in 1849. Its early days, but I need to firm things up to get some earlybird specials on flights. Bev Bonning and Lisa Sheppard are relatives that has been especially helpful in keeping me focussed and I owe a depth of gratitude for being able to drill down on my roots around somerset. Await your feedback, and possibly a one to one who can assist. Regards, Graeme. | View comments Add a comment |
