George Matthews - Bench on Playing Field
The Seavington News - March 1993 IN MEMORY OF GEORGE MATTHEWS A seat in memory of George Matthews, a former member of Seavington Football Club, and donated by his widow Olive, has recently been placed in the playing field. The picture shows their nephew, Kevin Swain, handing it over on behalf of Mrs Matthews to Tony Tolman, Chairman of the Seavington Playing Fields Association. Also in the picture, are past and present players, officials and members of Seavington Football Club. George (Knocker) Matthews, who loved football, started his playing career in the 1920’s playing for Dowlish Wake. He played for Seavington for a number of years and during the 1939-45 War played for the Army team in India. One of his proudest moments, which he often talked about was when Seavington beat Beaminster 3-1, who had previously gone two years without defeat. George scored Seavington’s three goals. After his playing days he continued to take a keen interest as a committee member and staunch supporter of Seavington Football Club. George and Olive lived at Rowdells Orchard, Seavington St Mary until his death in 1990. Olive later moved to Vaughan Lee House, Ilminster.
