Reyland Farms
The Reyland Family have farmed to the east of Seavington at Castle Farm specialising in potatoes. Carol Talbot (nee Reyland) has given us this account:
The Farm is Castle Farm, that is the name of Dad’s House now, but that used to be ‘Farlands’ ( Reyland /Farrel mixed) built by Gran & Gramphy Reyland, the second house they had built, they took that name with them to the bungalow they had built in Seavington, next to Buckrells.(third home built).
The whole area was once called Gummers Castle, (I was told). There were houses either side of the road, bit like Watergore, although going up the hill between Robin Gilberts bungalow & our cottages the road was widened so the ‘long garden’ is now just a wide verge. Between us & Chris’s (Sunnyside Farm, the bungalow) on the same side as us is the other ‘long garden’ where more houses were.
Dad can remember a well being in that ‘field’, but one day on his way home for dinner (he then lived at Sommercroft, which is situated next to present day Castle Farm. Gran & Gramphy Reyland had this one built first) he noticed something odd, the water was pouring over the top of the well. After dinner he walked back and the whole well had ‘imploded’, there was nothing left, not not even the windlass.
